Deborah Walker: Enigma

THE Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours has been showing the best in contemporary watercolour painting since 1831. Along with works by elected members, the annual exhibition features work by new, young and innovative artists selected from open submission, showing the full breadth of today’s diverse uses of water-soluble media.

Their 205th exhibition, currently at Mall Galleries, features more than 380 new works in water media from the super-sized (such as Deborah Walker’s Enigma, measuring almost 1.5 metres, for which Deborah specially designed and engineered huge lightweight drawing boards on which to stretch paper), to smaller works at a more domestic scale.

There will even be a special display of small works by members of the Institute, offering exquisite watercolours at affordable prices.

A number of prizes are awarded to artists in the exhibition, including the £1,000 Leathersellers’ Prize, specifically to support younger artists working in watercolours.
