STRIKING British Museum workers got a boost when a delegation from Camden Trades Council visited the picket line.

More than 100 Public Commercial and Service (PCS) members – mainly security workers and visitor information staff – have walked out for the whole week.

The strike is part of a national campaign by the union against low pay, pensions, for job security and redundancy terms.

The British Museum cancelled its programme of half term events because of the protest that has shut the museum’s Montague Place entrance.

A spokesperson for the museum said that the workers’ demands were “on matters related to terms and conditions beyond the museum’s control” as they were “subject to central government guidelines on pay”.

But speaking at the picket line on Tuesday Mark Serwotka, secretary of the PCS union, said the British Museum was “choosing not to invest in their staff”.

The PCS has already announced a further national strike by more than 100,000 members on March 15 to coincide with budget day and walk-outs by teachers in the National Education Union.
