King’s Cross Hurricanes beat Hurricane Potters to go five points clear at the top of the table

IT was the showdown that everyone had been waiting for, as the two top teams in the Chalk Farm Pool League finally went head-to-head on Monday night in a match-up that was about more than just bragging rights on the green baize.

King’s Cross Hurricanes and Hurricane Potters have taken this season by storm, leapfrogging each other in the Division One table on almost a weekly basis in what is unfolding as one of the most gripping title chases in the league’s history.

And it’s now very much advantage King’s Cross after they dominated the eagerly awaited fixture at the Hurricane Room, wracking up a resounding 7-2 victory.

Shaz Khan, Rupert Ward and Terry Thackeray gave Alp Sezer’s side what would prove an unassailable lead as they won the first three singles matches in the first-to-five-frames contest.

Mark Piercey pulled one back for the Potters, but it proved little more than a respite as King’s Cross quickly quashed any talk of a comeback with Peter Berrie and Nick Phillips and Khan and Ward teaming up to win their respective doubles matches.

With the destination of the points sorted, it became a question of just how big a marker King’s Cross could lay down. And they did it in style by winning the remaining two singles matches of the evening – Berrie and Phillips returning to the table to win their individual frames and put the gloss on the 7-2 victory.

The result finally gives King’s Cross a little breathing room at the top of the table as they now boast a five-point lead over the Potters. With 11 games down, and 11 still to go, however, there is a lot of pool left to be played.
