FIREFIGHTERS believe a house fire in Belsize Park was sparked by a cigarette.

The Brigade has now issued a fresh appeal for smokers to take care. A man and a woman were taken to hospital after the fire at a semi-detached house in Fellows Road last Tuesday evening.

A brigade spokesperson said: “The fire was discovered when a neighbour smelled burning and on investigation heard a smoke alarm sounding from a neighbouring property.

“If you’re a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. “If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home, but also cost you your life.”

Around 25 firefighters helped put out the blaze.
