ARSENAL’S stuttering season continued on Sunday when they crashed out of the Women’s FA Cup after being beaten 1-0 by Manchester City at Meadow Park.

Laia Aleixandri pounced on a loose ball in the box following a City free-kick to poke home the winner from close range in the 74th minute.

It’s another big blow for Jonas Eidevall’s side, who slipped six points behind leaders Chelsea in the Women’s Super League title race the previous weekend when they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat away to West Ham. With the Gunners having already failed to progress in Europe, the chances of the club securing silverware this term are looking slimmer by the second.

Continuing to focus on the positives, Eidevall said: “There’s no doubt that we’re really disappointed with the two results. That doesn’t mean that everything in those two performances was bad. I think we played well against a very strong Manchester City. And I don’t think we deserved to lose against West Ham. I think there were a lot of things that we did well in that game as well.”

Arsenal got back to winning ways last night (Wednesday) when they beat London City Lionesses 4-0 to reach the semi-finals of the FA Women’s League Cup.
