Arsenal Spurs derby

THERE’S little time for celebrating as Arsenal take their title march to Tottenham this Sunday for the “big one” that means everything to the fans.

Avoid defeat and the Gunners will spark St Totteringham’s Day celebrations – the day upon which supporters rejoice in the knowledge that Tottenham can no longer finish above Arsenal in the Premier League.

But this weekend only a win will do as Mikel Arteta’s side look to keep the pressure on rivals Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table.

Arsenal will go into the north London derby brimming with confidence after recording their biggest ever win over Chelsea on Tuesday night when a Martin Odegaard masterclass inspired them to a 5-0 victory at the Emirates.

Affording his side very little time to bask in the demolition job, Arteta said: “It’s great for us, obviously, for the confidence, for the belief that we can do it and we can come to these stages against big teams and we can perform and win games the way we have done tonight.

“So enjoy it, and then it’s back to work because we have a big north London derby on Sunday and we’re going to have to prepare really well to try to beat them. It’s going to be a tough one against a top side.”

Urging his squad to believe, Arteta added: “The margins are so small and sometimes you cannot be better than your opponent on the day, or you don’t have the luck you need in certain moments, but what do you have to do? You have to react and face the moment, and the moment is beautiful.

“So you certainly have to face it in the right way, value what we have and especially believe. If you are able to do it for nine months, you are able to win it, but you have to believe it first and you have to consistently do what you’ve been doing, nothing else.”

The win over Chelsea also marked what could prove another pivotal moment in the title run-in: the return of Thomas Partey. The midfielder has endured an injury-hit season but he quickly forged a formidable partnership in the middle of the park on Tuesday alongside Odegaard and Declan Rice.

“I’m happy to be back in the team and also to get a win in the derby,” said Partey after what was only his fifth start of the campaign. “It was a really important game, so I’m very happy.

Everything depends on us. We have to continue winning our games, we have a few more games left and we have to win them all.”

Arteta was also happy to see the Ghanaian international back in his starting line-up. “We thought it was a really good game for Thomas to come back,” revealed the Arsenal boss. “He looks like he is in rhythm, and he trained really well [during] the last few days.”
