Islington’s Primary Schools District team drew 1-1 away to Wandsworth in the Lester Finch Trophy

THOSE extra yards in training are clearly paying off for Islington & Camden’s talented young footballers following another impressive victory against tough opposition.

The boroughs’ best beat South London 1-0 away thanks to a last-gasp winner from Karter Davis, who headed home Albert Shirley’s inch-perfect corner.

“The boys dug really deep, and we couldn’t be prouder of an amazing team performance,” said manager Ryan Hassan after the recent win.

“Our hard work and extras in training really showed as we dominated the last 10-15 minutes as we were the much fitter team in the later stages.”

Meanwhile, Islington’s Primary Schools District team also picked up a good result on the road after drawing 1-1 away to Wandsworth in the Lester Finch Trophy at the start of the month.

With injuries and availability depleting the Islington squad, the Under-11s side faced a tough task against a traditionally strong side. But they still managed to take the lead when Evan Daniel rose to head home Zach Muir’s excellent in-swinging corner.

Wandsworth, however, equalised before the break, and it remained 1-1 thanks to some resilient defending from Muir, Roman Kendle and Thomas Upton Hansen, and some fine goalkeeping from Luke Strachan, who showed excellent handling and positioning when called into action.

Islington coach Salman Ali said he was “really pleased” with the effort his players put in all over the pitch. He added: “It was never going to be easy but, as a unit, the boys worked really hard. Scoring from a set-piece is also always really pleasing.

“We had a chat after the game and I think the boys agreed a draw was the fair result.”
