Don’t look back…National Opera Studio perform The Fatal Gaze

The Fatal Gaze

The Fatal Gaze is at Conway Hall on November 25

The so-called “Fatal Gaze” is a recurring theme in music, painting and the other arts: think Orpheus turning round to see Eurydice as he attempts to bring her back from death; the elders ogling Susanna as she bathes; the countless operatic characters who fall in love at first sight.

Whether there’s a meaningful connection between all these stories is a subject worth exploring – and it’s what the stage director Tim Albery does in a programme he’s devised for the young singers and repetiteurs currently studying at the National Opera Studio.

Effectively a concert with dramatic possibilities, The Fatal Gaze plays 7.30pm, £18/£15 students. Tuesday November 26, at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, WC1. Be careful where you look.
