THE capital’s top trampolinists had a spring in their step on Sunday when they helped jumpstart the new season in Europe’s largest annual youth multi-sports festival.

Almost 170 youngsters descended upon the Talacre Community Sports Centre in Kentish Town to showcase their skills in the London Youth Games trampolining competition.

With medals and precious points for their respective boroughs up for grabs, competitors performed challenging routines in front of six judges hoping to tuck, jump and twist their way onto the winners’ podium.

And there were some “incredible results” for north London’s finest, with Team Islington’s George Auberson bagging a bronze medal in the elite category, while Zephaniah Nwobodo scooped silver in the intermediate class.

Team Camden had plenty to cheer, too, with Liam Drake striking gold and Frankie English securing silver in their respective ParaGames categories.

The boroughs finished side-by-side in the points table, with Islington taking sixth place and Camden coming seventh. First place in the team charts went to Havering.

It was the first time that the trampolining competition has been held in Camden, and it proved such a success that there are already whispers that the event will be staged in the borough again next year.

That’s a massive boon for the head coach from Camden Trampoline Club, Hayley Harris, and Ebony McKenzie, the head coach from Sobell Trampoline Club, who joined forces to co-direct the showpiece.

“It was a new, exciting experience for us,” said Ebony. “As the Sobell Leisure Centre is under construction, Camden Trampoline Club has welcomed us under their wing and has allowed us to share their training space with them, so the children from Islington and Haringey can still continue their trampolining journey.”

Reflecting on her first time directing the competition, Ebony added: “I absolutely loved it, it was amazing working alongside Camden to put on the event. It was an exciting new adventure for myself and Hayley and it would be great to organise the competition again in the future.

“All the children really enjoyed themselves, the atmosphere on the day was very relaxed, and the standard on show was excellent.”
