Standon Calling 2016

Age Against the Machine will be at Dingwalls on New Year’s Eve

JANUARY gigs are a little thin on the ground – everyone needs a break at some time – but, if you seek, you shall find. But before the year ends, there’s an intriguing mixed reality concert at the Roundhouse, some Mississippi swing dancing, Gilles Peterson’s vast collection and an LGBTQ+ emo night to bring the year to a close plus a whole lot of New Year’s Eve parties, some live music, plenty of DJs and confetti for all. Then ease into 2024 with some smooth songs from the one and only Luther Vandross and our gig diary is back on track!

• Experience a groundbreaking mixed reality concert event created by late composer/musician Ryuichi Sakamoto in collaboration by Tin Drum. The novel KAGAMI concert fuses moving photography with the real world to bring to life the virtual Sakamoto performing on piano alongside dimensional art in surround sound – aided by wearable tech – suitable for audiences aged 14+ (Roundhouse, Dec 29-Jan 21).

• Prepare for NYE with a Mississippi Swing dance night accompanied by New Orleans-tinged r’n’b and swinging tunes plus DJ Baroness Jo Jo bringing the beats, at 100 Club on Dec 29.

• Broadcaster, DJ, producer and label head Gilles Peterson presents All Night Long at Jazz Cafe playing eclectic sounds from his extensive collection (Dec 30).

• Feeling sentimental for some old school beats? Room 187’s end-of-year old school r’n’b game show and karaoke special takes place at Islington Assembly Hall on Dec 30, followed by an after party at Lafayette taking you into the early hours of NYE.

• Emos Assemble! At the Scala, Face Down presents a pre-NYE night of pop punk, metal and emo – girls, gays and theys club takeover ft Delilah Bon + On Wednesdays We Wear Black + DJ Feral Witch with an after-party hosted by Luna Tune from 4am to 6am with drag karaoke, balloons, confetti and more.
