Hampstead RFC is hosting a ‘give it a go’ session for girls this Saturday

GIRLS interested in giving rugby a try are being invited to take part in a free “give it a go” day at Parliament Hill Fields.

Hampstead RFC will be hosting the taster session for 12- to 17-year-olds between 10.30am and 12.30pm this Saturday in the centre of the running track.

Explaining how the club is looking “to rebuild” its ranks following the Covid outbreak, head coach of the girls’ section Alan Sewell said: “We’ve been hit hard by Covid and want to build up our numbers again, so we’re having a ‘give it a go’ session this Saturday.

“We will be joined by the Finchley Girls squad – the Hampstead Girls join in with them for matches. No prior rugby knowledge or special kit is needed, so just come along.

“Our emphasis is on having fun, while learning a new skill and getting some exercise at the same time. We aim to make training sessions and matches enjoyable for everyone.

“We train on Saturday mornings on Hampstead Heath. The girls in the squad are incredibly friendly and welcoming. We have some girls who have played since they were really young and some who have only started in the last year or so.

“Two of our Under-16s were also selected to play for Middlesex last year, and some of our girls have gone on to play for the Hampstead Women’s team.”

Anyone interested in joining in can just turn up, or for further information on the club’s sessions email hampsteadgirlsrugby@gmail.com or check out the club’s website at www.hampsteadrugbyclub.co.uk. You can also find the club on Instagram @hampsteadgirlsrugby
