CAMDEN Market was filled with the sound of Green Day fans belting out songs by their favourite band ahead of a highly-anticipated gig this evening.

The American band, whose punk-rock music captured the angst of teenagers at the turn of the century, are playing an “intimate” gig at Electric Ballroom this evening (Friday).

Tents were pitched overnight by hardcore fans keen to get a prime spot at the front of the queue. John Sanchez said he had been camping since 5am. He said of the band: “I relate to the lyrics a lot, with my personal life, they mean so much to me. They’re everything to me.”

His friend Kerry Pibworth said: “They’re my entire life, generally, I discovered their music when I was 12, it was like, ‘oh my god, this is the best thing I’ve ever heard’. And it’s ten years later and it’s still the same feeling.”

Anita Omeara said she had travelled from Dublin for the concert. She said: “I’ve been a fan since I was a teenager, and I’m 31 now, so it’s pretty much my entire life.”

“Their older stuff could be considered more punk, nowadays it might be pop-punk, but then it’s alternative – people will call them lots of different things.”

Andy Costin, who had travelled from Reading, said it was rare for the band to play at such a comparatively small venue. “Green Day sell out whole arenas – they’re playing at Wembley in June. Only very lucky people are in this queue,” he said.
