Beans on Toast

Beans on Toast plays The Garage on March 9

CULT Camden folk artist Beans On Toast is touring again, this time having assembled an all-star band. The prolific musician will be joined by Scottish guitar wizard / folk songsmith Memphis Gerald, honky-tonk artist King Killership, festival poet Bassie Gracie and percussionist Abbi Drum as he plays tracks from his new album The Toothpaste and The Tube (recorded with blues duo Ferris & Sylvester), as well as plenty of old favourites at The Garage on March 9. Each night of the tour, as well as performing with Beans, band members will showcase their own material with a solo supporting set.

Here’s a night for Iggy Pop fans and general musos alike as Blondie drummer Clem Burke, former Sex Pistol and punk pioneer Glen Matlock and broadcaster, Pet Shop Boys dancer and former The Word presenter Katie Puckrick reform to perform Iggy’s classic Lust For Life album at Islington Academy on March 9. Iggy Pop and David Bowie collaborator Kevin Armstrong, Luis Correira on guitar and touring member of Heaven 17 Florence Sabeva on keyboards complete the band, which will also be revisiting songs from individual band members’ careers with the likes of Blondie, David Bowie and Sex Pistols. Special guest Suzi Ronson, former Bowie stylist and wife of guitar hero Mick Ronson will share stories from her new book Me and Mr Jones: My Life with David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars, while Fifteen Lions, Maniac Squat and producer Mark Plati and Suzanne Cooke support.

• Striking nu-gen trailblazer Cassyette tours her debut album This World F***ing Sucks – born out of the need to process her grief following the loss of her father – at Scala on March 11.

Photographer Dennis Morris – also known as the lead singer of reggae funk band Basement 5 – has chronicled the careers of Bob Marley, The Sex Pistols, Public Image Limited, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Simply Red, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Marianne Faithfull and many more, his work appearing in publications including Rolling Stone, Time, I-D, Vogue among others. He picks out some of the tracks that have guided him through his career in conversation with DJ and author Bill Brewster at Spiritland King’s Cross on March 12.

• Author Max Décharné, former member of Gallon Drunk and frontman of The Flaming Stars, discusses his new book Teddy Boys: Post War Britain And The First Youth Revolution with Tony Gleed at The Dublin Castle’s Rock ‘n Roll Book Club on March 12. With music from Midnite Crawlers.

With their vastly contrasting vocals, as joint frontmen, Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball brought the light and shade to 90s band Gomez. They play Islington Assembly Hall on March 13 to mark 25 years of debut album Bring It On and follow-up Liquid Skin. Support from Buddy.

• Trip hop artist Tricky brings his hugely influential 1995 album Maxinquaye – framed as Reincarnated after he started reworking tracks from the original album in 2022 – to the Roundhouse on March 14. He will be performing tracks from the original album, alongside the reincarnated tracks and other music from his catalogue on the night while Fran Lobo supports.

The Rev Richard Coles – formerly of Bronski Beat and The Communards and in more recent years, presenter, author and recently retired Church of England priest – bring tales from his life, encompassing sex, drugs, pop stardom, religious epiphany; love, a dream job, and the madness of grief to The Shaftesbury Theatre on March 11.

• UK hip-hop heavyweights and High Focus Records bosses The Four Owls – aka Fliptrix, Verb T, BVA and Leaf Dog – play Jazz Café on March 8.
