LITTLE SIMZ

Little Simz plays Ally Pally

PITCHFORK Music Festival returns next week with more than 60 acts, many playing multi-artist bills, across 17 London venues (Nov 7-13). The week-long festival starts with Mercury prize-winning Ezra Collective playing Royal Festival Hall (Nov 7) and has a huge selection of exciting line-ups including a one-day multi-venue, single-wristband Dalston takeover on Sat (Nov 11) with sets from Porridge Radio, Sorry, Wednesday and more.

Notable gigs include Sleater Kinney (above), U.S. Girls, + Black Belt Eagle Scout + Snõõper + M(h)aol + RVG at Roundhouse; Alabaster Deplume, Koko; Dudu Tassa and Jonny Greenwood, Hackney Church all on Nov 10; Yaeji + Jessy Lanza + George Riley + yunè pinku + Debby Friday + Blackwinterwells, Roundhouse; and Kara Jackson + Joanne Robertson + Annahstasia, Kings Place (Nov 11).

As Little Simz’ star rightfully continues to rise, she plays her biggest shows to date with two nights at Ally Pally on Nov 10-11.

• Greentea Peng (above) brings the cool points to Barbican ClubStage with her Selecta DJ set on Saturday (Nov 4). Opening until 2am, the club night will feature selections from Greentea’s record collection with support from handpicked DJs and artists.

10-piece brass band Old Dirty Brasstards bring their own unique twist to pop-punk classics from the 90s and 00s to Dingwalls on Nov 4. Expect two sets of huge hits and timeless anthems interpreted through brass arrangements from Green Day, Blink-182, My Chemical Romance and many more.

• Back in the 90s, good-humoured Bradford-based band Terrorvision had a knack for getting their light-hearted rock songs (sometimes verging on the novelty side) into the charts – remember Perseverance, Tequila, Oblivion and My House? They celebrate their 30th Anniversary at Electric Ballroom on Nov 4 with support from The Middlenight Men.

Continuing The Garage’s year-long 30th birthday celebrations, Dinosaur Jr (above) celebrates three decades since the release of their fifth studio album Where You Been, playing four nights at the venue from Nov 12-15).

• There was a time when anarchic, surrealist Irish band The Sultans of Ping were a particular flavour for some of the offbeat 90s indie crowd. They never reached the heights of the UK charts but their offbeat song Where’s Me Jumper was played at many a house party. With a knack for the bizarre – check out the bluesy Turnip Fish and snappy Stupid Kid – maybe it’s time to give them a bit of a revival. See for yourselves when they play Islington Assembly Hall on Nov 11.

Celebrate 40 years of dance music bible Mixmag at a special exhibition at Outernet featuring more than 100 of the magazine’s most iconic covers featuring the likes of Madonna, Daft Punk, Gorillaz and more. The works will be displayed across the whole of the venue’s space – The Now Building – on 23,000sq ft of floor to ceiling screens across four floors.

• Music photographer and BRIT school alumni Issy Ayla takes residence at The Roundhouse with her solo exhibition of predominantly analogue photos responding to the venue’s musical heritage – it runs from Nov 15-Dec 22. London-based Ayla’s work encompasses BTS for music videos, cover art, music performance and more candid moments with musicians.

Combine the power of music with doing some good at Rock For Hope’s second benefit gig at Underworld on Nov 4. Gift of Noise, The Alfies and The Fret Heads head the bill in aid of Gift of Hope, a charity dedicated to providing access to education for children in some of the worlds most deprived areas.
