SIAN Berry has been selected as the Green Party’s parliamentary candidate in the Brighton Pavilion constituency, raising similar questions faced by Danny Beales as to whether she will stay on as a councillor in Camden.

Green members selected her to stand in the seaside city on Thursday night, a move which follows MP Caroline Lucas’s decision to step down from the Commons at the next general election.

Cllr Berry – who is also a London Assembly member, and a former mayoral candidate and co-leader of the party nationally – will face off with Labour in Brighton after Sir Keir Starmer’s party recently made gains at local authority elections down there.

“I can promise every voter in Brighton Pavilion that I will work every moment between now and the general election to win their trust and support,” she said on Thursday.

Cllr Berry is, however, the only Green councillor in the council chamber in Camden and has powerful local recognition in the Highgate ward where Labour has repeatedly failed in targeted attempts to oust her from the split territory.

She has made no announcement on her future at the Town Hall, but she did attend last week’s full council meetings just days before her selection success.
