A ONE MILLION pound grime-busting project was unveiled this week as part of the Town Hall’s fight to clean up the streets.

The two new drive-on jet washers, which will operate across the borough’s dirt hot spots, were put through their paces in Mornington Crescent on Tuesday.

Environment chief Labour councillor Adam Harrison said the two new machines – which drive along pavements, blasting high pressure jets of water onto stubborn dirt such as chewing gum and leaving a spotless trail in its wake – were vital tools in the battle to keep Camden clean.

He explained how previous street-cleaning machines had been scrapped due to government austerity cuts.

Cllr Harrison said: “We have wanted to add extra investment into cleaning our streets for a long time, and they will work continuously across the borough, taking grease up off our pavements and keeping things as clean as possible.” The plans will also see businesses given specific times to put rubbish out for collection and extra road sweepers employed on high streets with high cases of litter-louting.
