• INTERESTING to see Canary Islanders protesting against the tourism that is blighting their lives. Will we soon see similar demonstrations here in central London?

Of course, we should welcome people from elsewhere to come and admire the sights but we make a terrible mistake if we allow tourism to become the mainstay of our area’s economy and the welfare and wellbeing of its existing inhabitants start to be considered as just a bloody nuisance.

Now they want to incorporate a circus in a redeveloped Saville Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue. We’ve got a big wheel coming to Camden Market. There was that absurd mound at Marble Arch.

Meanwhile our “historic” shop and office doorways are still providing shelter for people unable to find 21st century homes.

And kids who were born and bred in around here are driven out by high rents, Airbnb and the like. Meanwhile luxury flats stand empty earning rich profits for overseas investors.
