New images released this week of what Euston station could end up looking like

HS2 has released another batch of images showing how the roads around its new “downsized” Euston terminus might look before submitting its first major planning application to the council in the spring.

The computer-generated pictures show giant skyscraper office blocks and buildings rising high up above the Exmouth Arms pub in Coburg Street. Drummond Street comes to an abrupt halt ahead of a largely underwhelming west entrance to the station in what used to be Cardington Street.

Meanwhile, a northern entrance boasts a scaled back version of the split toenail design from the main entrance in Euston Square Gardens.

The latest drip feed of images is part of a so-called slimmed down Euston project that has been revised after HS2 Ltd bosses were ordered to reduce costs of the section.

An independent report ordered by prime minister Boris Johnson recommended removing a platform from the main station and running the HS2 trains into three decks of platforms.

The money spent on the original designs that have now been scrapped is more than £100million of public funds. HS2 Ltd says its latest images are part of a less complex, more efficient, 10-platform station that can now be built in a single stage.

HS2’s Euston area director, Laurence Whitbourn, said: “We are working hard to incorporate community feedback into our designs for Euston and make the station and surrounding area a place that local residents and rail passengers can enjoy and feel proud of.”

Residents who have already lived with five years of major works within metres of their homes are invited to see the designs at the Surma Centre and Maria Fidelis School from November 30 to December 3. Webinars are taking place for anyone interested.
