EXPERIENCED defender Amanda Ilestedt is no stranger to success, and it will cheer fans to hear that the two-time World Cup bronze medallist believes Arsenal have what it takes to create a winning culture this season.

Jonas Eidevall’s team are still fighting for domestic silverware on three fronts, with Saturday’s 2-1 win over Everton keeping them in the chase for the hallowed Women’s Super League title.

Beth Mead headed in the winner on a freezing day at Meadow Park after Katja Snoeijs had cancelled out Caitlin Foord’s opener.

That result keeps Arsenal just three points off the pace behind leaders Chelsea, with Liverpool next up in the league this Sunday.

And speaking ahead of last night’s (Wednesday’s) Conti Cup tie with Reading, 31-year-old Swedish international Ilestedt said she believed the unity of the group would be key to their success going forward.

“This group is very special in the way that it’s very united,” she told the New Journal.

“We really feel like a team and I don’t know if it’s that common on this level but it’s so clear.

“And together with our team spirit, we have world-class players, so I think that’s a good combination.”

She added: “Obviously it’s tough, but we are really aiming for big things this season.”

Chelsea at their best

Camden-born coach Emma Hayes ended Sunday by picking up a prestigious football writers’ award whose past recipients have included Tony Adams, Arsene Wenger, Thierry Henry and Pele.

The Chelsea boss began the day in style, too, with a comprehensive WSL win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in front of more than 20,000 fans.

Hayes later admitted she had fielded a “brave” line-up that included a full debut for stylish Swedish defender Nathalie Bjorn, a first-time captaincy for Niamh Charles and a home debut for keeper Hannah Hampton.

And it worked, as a masterclass in finishing from hat-trick heroine Lauren James secured a 3-1 victory over her old club, with Hayley Ladd grabbing a consolation goal for United.

“I’m not one to make safe decisions in life, even on my way out, I’m not going to do it,” said Hayes afterwards. “I believe in putting the best XI out no matter what anyone says. Today we made the right decisions. I thought it was a brilliant performance – from the whole team.”

Chelsea, who were set for a Champions League group clash with Real Madrid at the Bridge last night (Wednesday), face Brighton away on Saturday.
