PLAYERS from Hackney Wednesday have every reason to celebrate this summer after netting their third league and cup double in the Camden Sunday League in just five years.

Wednesday wrapped-up their triumphant league campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory against Acorn FC, adding the Division One title to the Frank Sheridan Senior Invitation Cup that they scooped earlier this season.

It was a special season for leading marksman Fergus McIntosh, who proved unstoppable for the Hyper Jades. “I’m really proud to finish as the club’s top scorer for the season – 27 goals and 16 assists in 28 games isn’t a bad haul, is it?

“We played every game available to us this season and just came up short in two finals, but to take the league title is the most important thing. It was a wonderful season with a wonderful group of lads.”

Wednesday took the lead against Acorn in the 20th minute thanks to an experienced finish by Leigh Stevens.

McIntosh then struck twice: nodding home Alex Stewart’s perfectly placed corner before adding another trademark penalty on the hour mark. Wednesday got their fourth thanks to an own-goal as the Acorn defenders buckled under pressure from powerhouse midfielder Matthew Stevens.

After being named man of the match, full-back Stewart praised his team-mates for all playing their part in what was a fantastic season. He told the New Journal: “We’re really pleased to win the title back from Badu, especially given the current strength of the league.

“We’ve got a small squad that’s had to play loads of games, and from back to front the whole team has been so consistent. Acorn are a very skilful team, so it’s satisfying to clinch it against them with such a strong performance.”
