Michael White's music news: Hampstead Garden Opera's La Boheme

Fiona Finsbury and Joseph Buckmaster

Fiona Finsbury sings Mimi and Joseph Buckmaster sings Rodolfo on November 8

A character who suffers with notoriously poor circulation, Mimi’s tiny hand will be frozen yet again when she takes to the stage in a new production of La Boheme by Hampstead Garden Opera – playing in the otherwise well-insulated circumstances of the Jackson’s Lane Theatre, Highgate.

What exactly there can be to say that’s new about an operatic standard like Boheme is hard to know. But Daisy Evans, who directs, will presumably do her best to find something fresh in Puccini’s narrative.

And, as always, it will give a chance for some young performers to show what they have – because the HGO productions are effectively training opportunities for singers not long out of college.

With two casts alternating through the run, there are accordingly two Mimis to have frozen hands. And however tiny they are, let’s hope the voices that go with them are good and big.

• La Boheme opens on November 8, 7.30pm, £22-£29, Jackson’s Lane Theatre, 269a Archway Road, N6 5AA, 020 8341 4421, hgo.org.uk  Until November 17
