Older campaigners said they were on a ‘loo leash’ due the lack of facilities

THE campaign to bring back public toilets to Kilburn took to the streets on Saturday.

Demonstrators from the Kilburn Older Voices Exchange brought placards urging councillors from Camden and Brent to come together and end years of inaction. Older people say they fear going out due to the lack of toilets in NW6 following closures in Kilburn Grange Park.

The group has claimed a recent success in getting several businesses along Kilburn High Road to commit to allowing the public in to use the loos.

But this is not a sustainable solution, say the elderly people who were handing out leaflets and raising awareness in the rain on Saturday.

KOVE member John Miles said: “We found a more sympathetic attitude than we expected and are now producing a leaflet listing the premises willing to allow non-customers to use their toilets on request. “The future of a facility in Kilburn Grange Park is a key issue which the council has promised to look at.”

He added: “London-wide, too, the campaign is building and we hope to be involved in a steering group pulling together all the bodies with an interest in setting up a London Toilet Commission following a recent event at The London Society.” It was World Toilet Day last week.
