TWO big hitters from St Pancras ABC continued to sharpen their skills ahead of the National Elite Championships next month.

Both Jermaine Dhliwayo and Sherifdeen Lawal stepped between the ropes at the Combat Sports Centre in Aldershot on Thursday to pit their wits against opponents from the Army.

Weighing in at just over 73kg, Lawal displayed “quick feet and precise punching” as he recorded a majority win over Mark Thompson, earning a 4-1 points win off the five judges.

Dhliwayo, meanwhile, was even more ruthless as he gained a unanimous victory over Liam Harvey. The 21-year-old dominated all three three-minute rounds as he picked up a 5-0 win at 62kg.

Dhliwayo wasn’t done there. On Saturday he returned to action with aplomb when he stopped the Navy’s Iwan Thomas in the second round of their scheduled three-rounder in Northampton.

“Jermaine was exceptional,” said St Pancras head coach CJ Hussein.

“On Saturday his opponent received a couple of standing counts in the opening round and I thought the contest was going to be stopped then.

“But the referee allowed the fight to continue and in the second round Jermaine tagged Thomas again, before landing a big left hand right on the button and the fight was stopped.

“Jermaine had also boxed Thursday when he won all three rounds convincingly, so Saturday was just like a fourth round. He continued where he left off.”

CJ added: “Sherifdeen is also looking strong and sharp. He displayed quick counter-punching in his bout, and quick feet as he kept on catching his opponent with a combination of precise punches. His opponent, Thompson, was a real warrior though, and never gave up. It was a great bout, they both boxed brilliantly.”

Lawal, 28, is expected to box again this Sunday on the Peacock ABC open show, while Dhliwayo is also expected to get more rounds in next week when he represents London. Both boxers will then join clubmate Christian Thomas for the National Elite Championships, which get underway in March.
