Team Camden – most from Regent High School in Somers Town – enjoy medal success at the ParaGames
TEAM Camden were still celebrating this week after winning a mighty medal haul at the ParaGames Athletics championships.
Held at the Weir Archer Academy in Kingston upon Thames, the borough’s top young athletes returned home with a staggering 16 medals – including five golds, seven silvers and four bronzes.
Their combined successes saw Camden finish third overall, earning them a team bronze following a record-breaking day out in Surrey last Tuesday.
Team Camden’s manager, Ben Dorsett, who works for Camden Council’s Sport and Physical Activity Service, said: “It was a great day and so nice to see so many young people from across London taking part in this event.
“All of the young people who represented Camden did extremely well. Winning a total of 16 medals between them makes them Camden’s most successful team in ParaGames athletics history.”
Illias Zghoundi won gold medals in the 100m and 200m, and a silver in the relay
Among the stars of the show was wheelchair racer Illias Zghoundi, who struck gold in the 100m and 200m.
The Maria Fidelis School pupil, who lives in West Hampstead, also joined forces with Sammy Rahman, Maryama Mudey and Kaycei White to scoop a silver medal in the mixed 4x100m relay.
Sammy, Maryama and Kaycei all enjoyed individual glory, too.
Sammy won silver medals in the boys’ 200m and the long jump, as well as taking bronze in the 100m.
And Maryama took silver in the girls’ 200m race and bronze in the javelin, while Kaycei powered her way to two more silver medals in the shot putt and the javelin.
The success didn’t stop there, however.
Shelby Reid showed sublime skill and strength to win gold medals in both the shot putt and the javelin.
Daniel Antek-Ellis also won gold in his shot putt, along with a silver medal in the javelin.
Salma Mohamed also brought back a bronze after finishing third in the javelin.
Scores of Team Camden’s top speedsters will be back in action this Sunday when they take part in the London Mini Marathon. Illias will also be competing in the wheelchair races.
