THE Town Hall has been bombarded with objections to a plans that would shut down a much loved chippy.

A developer has lodged a revised application to change the York Way Fish Bar into a three-bedroom maisonette after an earlier plan was rejected last summer.

Business owner Dursan Nalbant is in dispute with landlords about the “change of use” application that includes a new rear extension at 15 York Way.

Among a string of objections, Charlie Aldridge, who lives nearby, said: “This place is a goddamn institution and I will be dammed if your corporate and political greed will take away the heart and soul of this community. “This fish bar provides the true heart of this community and it will not be allowed to go without a fight.”

Marten Kappers, who has lived in Cantelowes Road and Camden Road for 20 years, said: “I have been a regular customer over this period and believe it is very important to the local community to maintain multiple businesses on the ground floor of the buildings around the intersection of York Way and Agar Grove … otherwise it will become a deserted no-go area.”

Student Ghaida Setiana said they “relied on their food when I don’t have time to cook”. Another supporter, Hanna Stephens, said the bar had “provided me with fish and chips since I was young and is always busy and well used by members of the local community”.

Other residents said the parade would be “desolate” without the fish bar and that building one more home in its place was not going to solve the housing crisis.

The Town Hall has been informed how the shop’s managers give out free and discounted food to those who need it. The plans would see the building retain a shop front design despite there being a flat inside.

The application, from agents Architecture for London on behalf of the landlord, said: “The design of the new unit has been carefully thought out and it will provide a good level of residential amenity for future occupants, as well as ensuring that there are no adverse amenity impacts on neighbouring occupiers. The proposal incorporates a traditional style shopfront which is in keeping with the character of the surrounding area.”

“The proposals will result in the loss of a commercial unit, and its associated external plant and extract equipment.

“This is of significant benefit to neighbouring occupiers in terms of noise and odour, and represents a significant benefit visually in terms of the contribution of the Site to the character and appearance of the conservation area.”
