OPINION: It could be time for Arsenal to explore ‘safe standing’

THE press box at the Emirates Stadium is surrounded by what has been known as the family enclosure, although this section is rather dominated by senior citizens enjoying reduced-price season tickets.

At the back, a man who attends every home match watches the action with a grimace and a regular demand for anybody standing up or walking out to SIIIIIT DOOOWN.

Presumably he repeatedly renews his ticket in the same spot – and yet he looks so frustrated at every match, appealing to stewards to intervene and getting grumpy with anybody who snaps back at the SIIIIIT DOOOWN order.

Arsenal have started playing messages before the matches start, urging supporters to remember that standing up can block the view of the person behind.

It is of course impossible for any human to sit glued to their seats when their team scores a goal – or nearly scores a goal – and how bad would the atmosphere be if everybody stayed seated like they were at Hamilton.

So it is a problem which will never be solved. The man at the back will continue feeling grumpy, continue telling everybody to SIIIIIT DOOOWN.

And yet other clubs are working on something of a solution and several clubs are at least trying to reach a compromise on “safe standing”.

Brentford, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Wolves, Aston Villa and Newcastle have arranged sections for this, and even the unmentionable place up the road is ahead of the game on this.

Arsenal have cornered off the front rows for the Ashburton Army and now we have the beat of a drum through many of the matches; although even that feels less enthusiastic than last season.

But the best way to claw back some of the traditional matchday experience would be to join the others and work out how to shake things up with the rail seating used by other clubs.

It is surely not beyond the wit of a well-paid architect to work out how it could be incorporated.

Many will tell you that they haven’t enjoyed a match as much since the terraces all went.

Of course, after Hillsborough something had to be done. Highbury never had the same cage fencing and the North Bank just after a goal went in was a riot of joy.

Now it’s proven that it can be done safely, Arsenal should find a way. It might help soothe all those enduring conversations about why the Emirates can be so quiet.
