SISTERS who could not ignore the plight of homeless people living near their Highgate Newtown estate have stepped into action – by creating 100 care packages to distribute to those in need.

Dance student Elizabeth Philpot, 19, and her sister Kacey, 15, who is a pupil at Acland Burghley school, had met people living on the street near their home – and were so moved by what they say that they knew they had to help.

The sisters met volunteers from the Gospel Oak-based charity, the Refugee Comm­unity Kitchen, who serve free food outside Archway station on Wednesday nights. Inspired by what they saw, they flew into action.

Elizabeth told the New Journal: “We were walking through Archway and we know some homeless people who are there and have helped them in the past.

“One evening, we met the people from the RCK and wondered what else we could do to help.”

The pair worked with the Thanet Youth Club in Gospel Oak and Fitzrovia Youth In Action to muster support.

Young people who attend the youth projects got together to source essential must-haves to create specially tailored bags.

Full of items such as toothbrushes and hygiene products, the bags have been gratefully accepted by the RCK and distributed through their outreach programme.

Elizabeth added: “We hope to do it again. It gave us all a sense of wholesomeness and we like the idea of giving something back. I wanted to do something to help the people I saw who are in need
