Cinoci FC celebrate their win against AFC Shooters at Hackney Marshes

THERE’S nothing like lifting silverware to chase away the grey skies.

And that’s exactly what debutants Cinoci FC did at the weekend when they finally overcame AFC Shooters on penalties to win the Camden Sunday League Junior Cup.

Supporters who braved the rain witnessed a nervy affair at Hackney Marshes with the game ending goalless in normal time.

The sides also couldn’t be separated in extra-time, meaning the league’s first major final of the season would have to be settled by a nail-biting shootout.

Ryan Blackwell, Simon Omope, Nick Barrett and Alex Dang all kept their cool from 12 yards to find the back of the net, while goalkeeper Harry Turnpenny also played his part in Cinoci’s thrilling 4-3 spot-kick win by saving two penalties.

The cup triumph literally sealed an iconic victory for the league newcomers. The club is named after a brand owned by one of their ambassadors, George Mazot – Cinoci spelt backwards being Iconic.

Describing the squad of old-school pals as “more than a football club”, founder Dang said: “It’s our first year as a club, and to win our first trophy in our first year is amazing.”

Cinoci could still land even more silverware this season – although they’re going to need a little luck along the way.

They trail Footballini United by one point in the Division Two table but have played two games more than their title rivals. The sides still have to play each other one more time in April, with their first meeting ending in a thrilling 3-2 victory to United.
