SECONDARY school students became market traders for the day as they tried their hand at selling school-grown fruit and veg.

The pupils – from Acland Burghley, Camden School for Girls and Maria Fidelis – set up shop in Inverness Street Market in Camden Town on Thursday.

They sold rhubarb, potatoes, spring onions, lettuce and herbs, scooping £972 for their schools.

It was part of a “know your onions” scheme run by the charity School Food Matters, which teaches young people about cooking and growing food.

Organiser Dela Foster said it was a delight to see pupils “start to connect the vegetables they cook with the ones they grow”, adding: “While there are quite a few opportunities at primary school to grow fruit and veg, these often dwindle at secondary school, leaving students with the impression that gardening is just for little children.”
