Camden Swiss Cottage swimmers who won gold medals in the Middlesex County Championships at the London Aquatics Centre

YOUNGSTERS from Camden Swiss Cottage Swimming Club continue to rip up the record books after taking their success to new lengths this month at the 2020 Middlesex County Championships.

Head coach Adam ­Taylor spoke of “pride” and “togetherness” after seeing his super squad of swimmers win an astonishing 128 medals at the London Aquatics Centre in Stratford.

Held over two weekends, Camden Swiss Cottage were officially crowned as the top club in the county after returning home with 57 gold, 40 silver and 31 bronze medals. It builds on their record 2019 success of 112 medals.

“Camden have started 2020 with a dominant ­display at the Olympic pool,” said Taylor. “For a second year running we were Top Club at the championships, improving our medal tally and final swims substantially.

“As coaches it was great to see nearly 100 swimmers from all squads competing together, learning from one another and supporting our proud team. We look forward to continuing this success throughout the rest of the season.”

Ines Guimond-Beetham scooped eight golds, ­winning the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly, the 100m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle, and the 400m individual medley.

The 12-year-old speedster also scooped a silver in the 50m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke.

Isabella Thanassoulas, 11, and Ava Lambropoulos, 13, kept pace by winning six gold medals each. Isabella took home an impressive 13 county medals, including golds in the 200m backstroke, the 200m butterfly, the 200m individual medley, and the 50m, 100m, and 400m freestyle. She also took silver medals in the 50m and 100m butterfly, the 50m and 100m backstroke, the 100m and 200m breaststroke and the 200m freestyle.

Clubmate Ava won her golds with a clean sweep of the butterfly events, touching home first in the 50m, 100m, and 200m races. She also topped the podium in the 400m freestyle and the 200m and 400m individual medleys. Ava also ­collected silver medals in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle.

Along with medals, there were elusive championship trophies up for grabs for the best of the best – the fastest overall swimmers in each stroke. Anna Podurgiel, 18, Donatas Dragasius, 16, and Ella McEver, 15, all took home four gold medals each and championship trophies.

Anna was crowned the overall champion in the 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley, while also winning gold in the 50m butterfly and the 50m backstroke. She completed a superb meet by winning silver in the 100m butterfly and a bronze in the 200m freestyle and the 100m and 200m backstroke.

Donatas became the 2020 junior champion in the 200m individual ­medley and the 400m freestyle, while adding two other gold medals in the 200m backstroke and 1,500m freestyle. And he also added silver medals in the 200m breaststroke, the 200m freestyle, and the 50m and 100m ­backstroke.

Ella continued Camden’s dominance by becoming the 400m ­individual medley junior champion, while also ­taking gold medals in the 100m butterfly, the 100m breaststroke and the 200m individual medley.

She also won silver medals in the 200m backstroke and the 50m and 200m breaststroke, along with bagging a bronze in the 50m butterfly.

Nick Finch, 14, and Victor Gould, 11, both found themselves on top of the championship podium four times. Nick took gold in the 50m freestyle, the 100m breaststroke, and the 50m and 100m butterfly. He topped up his medal haul by winning silver in the 50m backstroke, the 50m breaststroke, and the 100m freestyle, and bronze medals in the 100m backstroke, the 200m butterfly and the 200m individual medley.

Victor, meanwhile, took gold in the 100m butterfly, the 200m breaststroke, and the 100m and 200m freestyle. He also collected silver in the 50m butterfly, the 100m breaststroke and the 200m individual medley, while adding bronze in the 200m butterfly and the 400m freestyle.

There were a host of double gold medallists, with Emilia Magliocco, 15, winning the 50m freestyle and the 100m backstroke, Leo He, also 15, winning the 50m and 100m freestyle, Brandon Biss, 15, winning the 100m and 200m backstroke, Alexis Lambropoulos, 16, winning the 200m and 400m freestyle, Eva Harris Brown, 13, winning the 50m and 200m breaststroke, and Lucas Bohm, 13, winning the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

There were also gold medals for Edie McGrath, 15, in the 200m butterfly, Leon Biss, 11, in the 200m backstroke, and Damian Miceta, 13, in the 200m breaststroke.

Para-swimmers Charlotte Hyde, 18, Leah O’Connell, 18, and Ellie Simmonds, 26, also came away victorious.

Charlotte won gold in the 400m freestyle, Leah won gold in the 50m butterfly, the 100m backstroke, and the 50m and 100m freestyle, and Ellie took home gold for her 200 individual medley.

Meanwhile, two of Camden’s youngest competitors, Benjamin Podurgiel and Charlotte Shao, who are both 10, impressively won bronze medals despite swimming in an 11 and under age group.
