The Tomb Raider Live Experience is no more

LARA Croft has raided her last tomb in Camden Town – leaving a giant hole in the centre of Stables Market.

The Tomb Raider Live Experience, based on the PlayStation classic starring the athletic archaeologist Lara Croft, has shut after opening in Camden Market in 2022.

Signs on the window said: “Tomb Raider: The Live Experience has now closed. Thank you for becoming the hero with us. We hope to see you in the future for another adventure!”

Players who took part in the game were taken on a journey through detailed sets, taking on challenges and interacting with cast members in an effort to collect as many “relics” – multicoloured plastic treasure balls – as possible.

It was part of a new “experience economy” that was hoped to transform the fortunes of the ailing high street – and in a publicity stunt a Lara Croft figure was pictured looking down on Camden Market.

Simon Pitkeathley, chief executive of Camden Town Unlimited, said: “High streets evolve, they change all the time – Camden’s been in a state of flux and change. [Tomb Raider] was an experiment. Maybe it didn’t work out, but I like the idea they are trying different things.”

He said he would like to see things that Camden residents would use in the market, including “health facilities – places that people have to go to anyway. It would be great to see more of that sort thing: more things local people would come to. But at the same time, the economics of it have to work.”

It is up to LabTech, the company that owns the Market, to decide what will fill the space left by Tomb Raider.
