They employed girls who were paid meagre wages and were forced to work for 12 hours a day under the most horrendous conditions. In Thursday’s talk writer, broadcaster and historian Dr Louise Raw discusses the Match Girls, who rebelled in 1888 and took part in a groundbreaking strike that played an important role in the burgeoning modern labour movement.
