THE Camden New Journal group is looking to hire a full-time news journalist.

The role will be on the Camden New Journal newspaper and website. It will be focussed on crime reporting but the successful applicant will also be required to write general news and develop their own areas of interest.

At times, they will be required to assist our sister titles, the Islington Tribune and the Westminster Extra.

We are not looking for a reporter only interested in the lurid details of crimes or one aiming to use the issue to simply shock readers, however much this may lead to quick web traffic figures. We are not looking for stories that start with phrases like ‘this is the first picture of somebody who has died‘ as if obtaining a photo from Facebook is more important than a thorough, thoughtful and long term approach.

Instead, we are looking for a journalist who can look for the wider stories behind important issues and source genuine exclusives.

Given the nature of our newspaper, they will be both capable of covering ‘hard’ news stories, as well as celebrating the best of the borough with more upbeat or unusual articles.

Applicants should have a working knowledge of our readership areas, a good appreciation of current affairs, online skills and a strong news sense. They must have a clear writing style which cuts through the jargon.

The position will be based at our offices in Camden Town as Covid restrictions allow. As we move forward, however, reporters should not be in front of a screen all day and should be comfortable in going to events and meeting people face-to-face where and when it is safe to do so. Being able to interview people with both sensitivity and scrutiny, as required, is a must-have skill.

There is some flexible working, but there will be some evening work and occasional weekend duties depending on how different stories develop.

The use of social media is of course important and leads to tips and ideas, but we are looking for a reporter who is not content with scraping articles from social media and wire copy, and instead is keen to develop their own original stories and able to think how they might be told and shared online.

Salary will be dependant on experience but competitive with local newspaper industry rates.

There is no closing date as we are looking to find the right candidate as soon as possible. There may be some flexibility but ideally the reporter would begin work in June.
