What a useless bunch of candidates!

Thursday, 2nd May

• I’M disappointed to see several candidates for the post of London mayor offering policies led by abolishing the ultra low emission zone (ULEZ) scheme aimed at cutting air pollution by getting rid of old, highly polluting, cars off our roads.

Actually I’m disgusted by this mindless opportunism, with the Tory candidate claiming to want to “Make London’s streets safer” followed by “Scrap ULEZ, low-traffic neighbourhoods, and mileage charges on cars”.

Some candidates are even more ridiculous in their opposition to ULEZ such as the “founder of FairFuelUK”, which at least has an appropriate acronym!

In any case, the charge only impacts a few thousand owners of old cars and there is a scrappage scheme to help with some of the costs. So this is a minor issue even for those with stinky old bangers!

I have argued that there is little need for private cars in a city with an amazing and cheap public transport system, and we should be doing all we can to cut the high levels of pollution with all of its health effects on the whole population, including car drivers!

To have this as your main policy ideas shows a pathetic lack of understanding of that issue while ignoring the many truly appalling issues facing Londoners such as homelessness, road accidents and the major health problems in the city, many of which are attributed to pollution!

What a useless bunch of candidates! Cast your votes wisely people!
