A ROCK ’n’ roll musician shut down Camden Market on Monday when over 500 fans flocked to see the secret gig.

Alt-pop punk singer Yungblud, whose real name is Dominic Harrison, posted on social media on Monday morning that he was hosting a surprise gig in the market later that day where he would be making his “biggest announcement yet”.

A queue of people began forming outside Stables Market from 6am for the five-song set, which kicked off at 5pm. To a huge crowd, Yungblud hung off the railings and outdoor seating pods around the market’s ampitheatre and screamed: “Camden Town, this is f***ing history.

Five years ago we started a movement, are you ready for what’s next?” Frankie Benson set off from her home in Manchester at 2 30am to join the start of the queue in Camden to see her favourite artist.

She told the New Journal: “The gig went amazingly. It felt like such an iconic and beautiful thing to be a part of. He said some stuff about wanting to create a community where everybody can be themselves and not have to worry about being ‘weird’ or classed as an outcast.

“And the family [of fans] he’s created over the last five years are really special to him and he wants us all to be together.”

The 26-year-old star from Doncaster previously tried to host a surprise gig in Camden Market in December 2021, but the event was cancelled and postponed at the last-minute due to safety concerns. Joanne Kerr, who travelled from east Sussex to get to Camden, also said the gig was “amazing”.

She added: “Everyone from the Black Hearts Club (what Yungblud calls his fanbase) united with all our differences thanks to the legend himself.”

On Monday, a banner promoting his one-day summer festival, Bludfest, was unfurled steps away from the Amy Winehouse statue.

To make music festivals more accessible, tickets to Bludfest will cost £49.50.

The singer also announced he will be building a replica of his favourite pub, The Hawley Arms, at the festival, which will take place in Milton Keynes this August. After the gig, Yungblud took over the famous pub, pulling pints behind the bar and singing with his fans all night.

Abdul Hai, director of community relations and public affairs at Camden Market, said: “Yungblud’s performance brought an energy and buzz to the market that we love to see.

“We look forward to showcasing both emerging and established musicians with more secret gigs at Camden Market in the future. Today, we are proud to continue this legacy by supporting some of the UK’s most promising young talent.”
